L’anticipation correspond à un genre littéraire et cinématographique lié à la science-fiction, regroupant des œuvres dont l’action se déroule dans un futur proche ou hypothétique. Le genre abonde dans les représentations liées à des sociétés humaines prophétisées par les auteurs comme autant d'utopies ou de dystopies pouvant libérer ou asservir l’Humanité. L'An 2440, rêve s'il en fut jamais de Louis-Sébastien Mercier, publié en 1771, illustre parfaitement cette tendance : il s’agit d’un roman d'anticipation, dans lequel l’auteur imagine comment sera le monde quelque six cents soixante-dix ans plus tard, dans un Paris libéré par une révolution paisible et heureuse de l’oppression et où règnent la raison, les lumières, la justice des Lumières. Néanmoins, « anticipation » n’est pas un synonyme de science-fiction. Plusieurs œuvres de science-fiction ne peuvent être classées dans la catégorie « anticipation ». Par exemple, E.T. l'extra-terrestre de Steven Spielberg est un film de science-fiction, car il met en scène un personnage d’extraterrestre, mais ce n’est pas un film d’anticipation, car rien n’indique que l’action se déroule dans le futur.
