Première version du Halftrack M3 désarmé
L’autochenille blindée Halftrack M3 fut le premier véhicule de transport de troupes de l'US Army à être employé opérationnellement.Il fut construit et utilisé intensivement durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et continua sa carrière bien au delà au Proche-Orient notamment ou il fut utilisé sous de nombreuses versions en Israël ou au Liban (ALS). Certaines versions sont d'ailleurs encore utilisées aujourd'hui comme le Tsefa. Sa version antiaérienne française, le M 16, termine quant à lui sa carrière opérationnelle au milieu des années 80.
Présentation
Conçu par le constructeur Diamond T comme le Halftrack M2, il pouvait transporter jusqu'à 10 combattants.
Mis en œuvre par un équipage de 3 hommes, il disposait d'un moteur essence, d'une boîte de vitesse à 4 rapport et d'un treuil avant de 4,5 t. Son blindage allait de 6,3 à 12,7 mm.
La version de base dite M3A1 disposait d'une mitrailleuse lourde placée à l'avant du véhicule. 70 variantes représentant 41 000 véhicules sortirent usines de Diamond T, White et Autocar dont une version M 16 à quatre mitrailleuses calibre .50 montées sur affut quadruple Maxon.
