Autochenille militaire israélienne
Une autochenille (en anglais half-track) est un véhicule terrestre possédant un pont avant directeur équivalent à celui d'une automobile et un système propulseur équipé de chenilles.
Le système a été inventé et mis au point par le français Adolphe Kégresse en 1910. Par rapport à un engin chenillé ordinaire comme un bulldozer, l'autochenille présente les caractéristiques suivantes :
- chenilles plus légères donc poids total du véhicule inférieur
- direction plus stable et plus précise permettant une vitesse supérieure
Par rapport à un camion, l'autochenille est bien plus adaptée à des déplacements hors route.
Ce système a été largement utilisé à la fois pour des engins civils comme les Citroën Kégresse-Hinstin et pour des engins militaires en général appelés half-track ou semi-chenillé.
