Liutprand

Liutprand (né après 680 - mort en 744) est le fils du roi des Lombards d'Italie Ansprand, duc d'Asti. Il lui succéde sur le trône royal en juin 712, demeurant roi des Lombards jusqu'en 744.

Biographie

Durant cet assez long règne de près de 32 ans, il tente vainement d'unifier la péninsule italienne sous la domination lombarde, entrant régulièrement en conflit avec la Papauté. Il doit également soumettre les duchés lombards semi-indépendants de Spolète (du duc Transamund II) et de Bénévent, et tente d'expulser définitivement les Byzantins d'Italie en assiègeant notamment Ravenne en 734, sans succès.

En bonne entente avec les Avars, les Bajuvares, et les Francs, il aide ces derniers en participant à la bataille de l'étang de Berre contre les Musulmans qui dominaient le sud de la Gaule depuis les années 720 [1].

En 735, il associe au pouvoir Hildeprand, son petit-fils [2] et meurt en janvier 744 de mort naturelle [3]

Selon Paul Diacre et son Historia Langobardorum, Liutprand fut un grand roi, pieux et sage dans ses décisions, bon chef militaire, et législateur. Il peut être considéré comme le plus grand des rois lombards, et sous son règne, Ticinum (Pavie) devient un grand centre de culture. Il est inhumé à Pavie, la capitale lombarde.
