Lee Ufan est un artiste, écrivain et philosophe coréen né à Haman-gun (province de Gyeongsangnam) en Corée, le 24 juin 1936.
Il a étudié la poésie, la peinture et la calligraphie, notamment auprès de Hwang Kyun-Yong. Il entre à la School of Art de l'Université Nationale de Séoul en 1956 avant de poursuivre des études de philosophie à l'Université Nihon (Tokyo) en 1958. Parmi les philosophes qui ont influencé son art, on trouve Nietzsche, Rilke, Martin Heidegger et Maurice Merleau-Ponty. C'est en 1971 que Lee et plusieurs autres artistes participants à la Biennale de Paris présentent aux européens le concept du Mono-ha. Ce mouvement met en scène les matériaux façonnés par l'homme d'une part, et les matières premières brutes d'autre part, au travers visuels censés illustrés les rapports intimes qui existent entre le naturel et l'artificiel.
Le travail de Lee Ufan se concentre particulièrement sur le point et la ligne. Travail qu'il décrit dans de nombreux essais. Il accorde une importance particulière à la symbolique des matériaux.
