Le marché remonte au XIVe siècle. Il est bâti sur ce qui a été le centre de Londres à l'époque romaine.

Conçu en 1881 par Sir Horace Jones — qui a également été l'architecte de Billingsgate et Marchés Smithfield —, ce dernier souhaitait faire de cette construction une attraction touristique.

Ce marché a été utilisé en pour représenter la région de Londres, près de The Leaky Cauldron et Diagon Alley, dans le film Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers en 1997. Plus anciennement, en 1991, le video-clip Love To Hate You du groupe pop anglais Erasure y fut partiellement tourné.

Activité

Ouvert de sept heures à la fin de journée du lundi au vendredi, les vendeurs du Leadenhall Market sont des fromagers, bouchers ou encore des fleuristes. Ce marché est populaire parmi les travailleurs urbains locaux.

Architecture

Le toit est orné d'une structure peinte en vert et les pavés et étages du bâtiment actuel sont marron et crème.
