La Célestine, ou tragi-comédie de Calixte et Mélibée est une pièce de théâtre parue de 1482 à 1592 sous le voile de l’anonymat. En 1502 un typographe remarqua que les lettres initiales de chaque strophe du poème prologue rapprochées les unes des autres, formaient le nom de Fernando de Rojas.
La Célestine est une tragi-comédie régie par le sexe et l’argent. Cette satire de mœurs à l’énergie incroyable voit Célestine, la vieille maquerelle, chargée de convaincre la douce Mélibée d’épouser le jeune Calixte. Et l’entremetteuse de parvenir à ses fins... Mais à quel prix ? Sous ses airs de comédie légère, le texte de Fernando de Rojas emporte avec lui (enterre !) cinq personnages... Tourbillon endiablé, pièce écrite sept ans après l’Inquisition

- 2007 : Mise en scène de Françoise Coupat, traduction de Florence Delay, avec Valérie Crunchant (dans le rôle de Mélibée), Marc Arnaud, David Bursztein, Michel Hermon (dans le rôle de la Célestine), Thierry Paret, Laure Pierredon (du 28 novembre 2007 au 7 décembre 2007 au Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse de Lyon).
- 2009 : Mise en scène de Christian Esnay, avec les élèves de l'Ecole Régionale d'Acteurs de Cannes (du 20 janvier au 1er février 2009 au Théâtre de l'Aquarium à Paris).
Édition
Les Bibliophiles de France ont publié en 1950 une édition illustrée de La Célestine, avec des lithographies en couleurs de Maurice Lalau.
