L' American Film Institute (Institut américain du film) est une organisation indépendante à but non lucratif créée par le programme National Endowment for the Arts, qui est fondée en 1965 quand le président Lyndon B. Johnson signe l'Acte de la Fondation nationale des arts et de l'humanité. L'American Film Institute se concentre sur l'enseignement, avec l'AFI Conservatory, qui préserve les vieux films sujets à la dégradation de leur pellicule. En dépit de son nom, l'AFI n'est pas centré exclusivement sur les films, mais aussi sur la télévision.
En 1973, l'AFI met en place le Life Achievement Award
En 1998, le centième anniversaire du film américain, l'Afi débute ses 100 Years Series, célèbrant et promouvant l'intérêt de l'histoire cinématographique.
L'organisation ouvre récemment l'AFI Silver theatre à Silver Spring au Maryland, non loin de Washington.
Chaque année, l'American Film Institute établit le classement des 100 meilleurs films américains de l'histoire. Il s'agit du top 100 de l'American Film Institute.
