American Recordings (album)

American Recordings est une série de cinq albums du chanteur country Johnny Cash dont le premier a paru en 1994 et a remporté un Grammy.

Quatre autres albums portant ce titre et un sous-titre, réalisés sous la même thématique (nouvelles versions de chansons d'autres artistes) ont suivi entre 1995 et 2002, soit quelques mois avant que survienne son décès à l'âge de 71 ans. Ces quatre albums sont: Unchained (14 pistes), Solitary Man (14 pistes), The Man Comes Around (15 pistes), et A Hundred Highways (12 pistes). "A Hundred Highways" ne fut toutefois pas le dernier album de Johnny Cash.

Le premier tome de 1994 fut produit par Rick Rubin qui enregistra Johnny Cash dans son salon, accompagné seulement de sa guitare. Cash a souvent été en conflit avec ses producteurs qui voulaient polir davantage son son ; il avait découvert dès ses débuts avec Sam Phillips que sa voix se prêtait mieux à un style musical plus dégarni. Le succès de sa collaboration avec Rick Rubin provient du fait que ce dernier recherchait un son minimaliste.

Les chansons Tennessee Stud et The Man Who Couldn't Cry ont été enregistrés en concert au Viper Room, un nightclub du Sunset Strip à Los Angeles qui appartenait à Johnny Depp à l'époque.

L'album a été accueilli par la critique comme son meilleur album depuis les années 1960 ; ses versions de chansons d'artistes plus modernes, comme le groupe de heavy metal Danzig (dont le chanteur, Glenn Danzig, a écrit la chanson Thirteen exprès pour Cash) et Tom Waits ont contribué à faire connaître Johnny Cash auprès d'un nouveau public.
