Horace Kallen
Horace Meyer Kallen (1882-1974) était un philosophe Juif Américain. Il est né à Berenstadt en Allemagne et son père était un rabbin orthodoxe. Les Kallen arrivèrent aux États-Unis en 1887. Horace obtint une licence en 1903 et un doctorat en 1908 à l’Université d’Harvard.
Kallen était un pluraliste et s’opposait à la simplification systématique des problèmes philosophiques. Selon lui, nier les complications et les difficultés revenait à les multiplier et nier la réalité parce qu’elle était mauvaise revenait à augmenter le mal.
Lui et d’autres ont avancé l’hypothèse que la diversité culturelle et la fierté nationale n’étaient pas incompatibles et que la diversité ethnique et les différences raciales étaient une force pour l’Amérique. C’est lui qui a le premier parlé de « pluralisme culturel ».
