Né à Ballenstedt dans l'Anhalt, Johann Arndt fut pasteur luthérien à Quedlinburg, puis à Brunswick.
Il a composé des écrits pleins d'une piété douce et mystique, qui lui ont valu le surnom de Fénelon de la Réforme. Le plus célèbre est le Vrai Christianisme (en allemand), 1609.
