Slum VillageJames Dewitt Yancey, plus connu sous les noms de Jay Dee , J Dilla, était un producteur/rappeur américain qui émergea au milieu des années 90 de la scène underground hip-hop de Détroit.
Il était signé sur l'un des labels underground les plus connus, Stones Throw Records.
Il a collaboré avec de nombreux artistes notamment Busta Rhymes, Common, Slum Village (il fait partie du groupe jusqu'en 2000), A Tribe Called Quest, Madlib (avec qui il sort l'album Champion Sound sous leur nom de Jaylib), ...
Victime d'une maladie du sang , il décède des suites d'un Arrêt cardio-circulatoire en 2006.
En 2007, Busta Rhymes, avec qui il collaborait fréquemment depuis les débuts en solo de ce dernier, sort une mixtape hommage, Dillagence, en utilisant des productions faites avant sa mort.
