La Société financière internationale (SFI) est créée en 1956. Sa création s'avère nécessaire car la Banque internationale pour la reconstruction et le développement ne peut accorder de prêts à des investisseurs privés que si l'État où œuvre l'entreprise se porte garant du prêt.
Or, indirectement, cela avait pour effet de créer un certain contrôle des États sur les investisseurs privés, ce que ces derniers n'apprécient pas. Ainsi, la SFI est créé de façon à pouvoir assurer l'octroi de prêts ne nécessitant pas de garanties étatiques.
