L'Institute of Space and Astronautical Science du Japon est l'un des trois organismes qui ont fusionné en 2003 pour former l'Agence d'exploration aérospatiale japonaise. L'ISAS a des bureaux (avec des installations de test de satellites) à Sagamihara, dans la banlieue de Tokyo, en direction de Yokohama et de Fuji-san.
L'ISAS a été responsable ou impliqué dans de très nombreuses missions d'exploration spatiales (La Lune, Mars, les comètes, le rayonnement X) (satellites Astro A, B, C, etc. ASTRO-F) qui ne sont pas très connues quoi qu'ayant donné des résultats scientifiques.
