If I Fell est une ballade des Beatles, composée par John Lennon et parue sur le troisième album du groupe, A Hard Day's Night. Elle est interprétée dans le film du même nom, lors de la scène où Ringo Starr est énervé. Lennon la lui chante pour lui redonner le sourire.

Composition

John Lennon avoue plus tard que cette chanson était semi-autobiographique ; sa relation avec sa femme, Cynthia Powell, n'était pas heureuse, et il la trompait régulièrement : « Bien sûr que je suis un lâche, avoue-t-il à un journaliste en 1968, je n'avais pas le courage de quitter Cynthia et de vivre seul »[1].

Lennon a déclaré que cette chanson était sa première « ballade réussie », suivie en 1965 de In My Life, sur l'album Rubber Soul, construite par ailleurs sur le même accord[1].

Texte

Le chanteur prévient une fille que s'il s'engage envers elle aux dépens de sa compagne actuelle, elle ne devra pas lui faire faux-bond ultérieurement, car il s'en retrouverait inconsolable. Cette chanson traduit en fait les sentiments que l'auteur, John, éprouvait à cette époque.
