Seretse Ian Khama, né en février 1953[1], est l'actuel président du Botswana. Il fut vice-président du 13 juillet 1998, avec l'arrivée de Festus Mogae au poste de président[2], au 1er avril 2008, date à laquelle il accéda lui-même au poste de président.[3]

Seretse Ian Khama est le fils de Seretse Khama, père de l'indépendance du Botswana.

Militaire de formation, Seretse Ian Khama suit les cours de l'académie royale militaire de Sandhurst[4]. Il dirige ensuite les forces armées botswanaises avant de rentrer en politique en 1998 au poste de vice-président et de ministre des Affaires présidentielles[5].

Ian Khama est depuis 1979 chef de la tribu des bamaNgwato[6].

Le 1er avril 2008, le président Mogae démissionne de son mandat pour laisser la place à Khama[7], l'élection suivante étant prévue pour octobre 2009.[8]
