Le Christ sur la croix entre Marie et Jean
Hubert van Eyck était un peintre flamand de l'école des primitifs flamands du XVe siècle, né vers 1366 à Maaseik (actuelle province de Limbourg en Belgique), mort en septembre 1426 à Gand.
Il était le frère de Jan van Eyck. Jan Van Eyck était très célèbre dans la peinture flamande car il a inventé la peinture à l'huile en rajoutant aux couleurs de la terébenthine. Cela permit de faire des tableaux aux détails plus précis et aux couleurs vives.
On lui attribue, sans certitude, d'avoir commencé le célèbre retable de l'agneau mystique (fini par son frère) situé dans la Cathédrale Saint-Bavon de Gand. Il aurait d'ailleurs été inhumé dans la chapelle où était exposé ce retable.
On retrouve son effigie dans Les effigies des peintres célèbres des Pays-Bas de Dominique Lampson.
