L'hémidactyle commun, ou gecko des maisons, ou encore (aux Antilles) mabouya domestique, est une espèce de gecko nocturne et arboricole répandue dans de nombreux pays.

Le nom de cette espèce vient du mot mabuya, qui désigne dans les caraïbes un esprit mafaisant. Ce terme est passé dans le langage courant pour désigner les geckos.

Répartition géographique

Ce lézard est originaire du continent africain, mais il s'est répandu dans de nombreux pays, comme en amérique du sud.

Écologie

Ce reptile vit dans un climat chaud et humide, où l'hygrométrie dépasse les 60%, avec des températures entre 25 et 30°C la journée et chutant faiblement la nuit (20 à 25°C environ). Il est insectivore et chasse la plupart des insectes et arthropodes de taille adaptée. Il s'est bien adapté à la présence humaine, entrant fréquemment dans les maisons pour chasser les insectes, là où il cotoie l'homme. Étant animal territorial, il défend son territoire contre les autres mâles.

Reproduction

Ce gecko est mature un peu avant sa première année.
Les œufs sont pondus deux par deux et incubent durant environ deux mois. Les petits ont le même régime alimentaire que les adultes.

Noms vernaculaires

Son nom vernaculaire est mabouya à la Désirade (Guadeloupe).

Élevage en captivité

Il faut un terrarium semi-tropical de grande taille avec un grand nombre de cachettes et de grosses branches. Un fond simulant un mur ou un gros rocher est préférable.
