Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks est une poétesse américaine née le 7 juin 1917 à Topeka (Kansas) et morte le 3 décembre 2000 à Chicago, (Illinois).
Fille de Keziah Wims Brooks et David Anderson Brooks. Sa mère formait des professeurs et a quitté son travail pour le mariage et la maternité. Son père, fils d'un esclave fugitif qui s'était battu durant la guerre civile, avait renoncé à ses études de médecine par faute de moyens et travaillait comme portier.
