Ville du sud-ouest du Bénin, située sur le littoral à la frontière togolaise. Ancien comptoir commercial portugais, la ville s'est réellement développée durant la colonisation française sous l'impulsion de l'administrateur Dreyfus dès 1901.
Aujourd'hui, grâce à sa plage et malgré son érosion désormais sous contrôle, cette cité est principalement orientée vers le tourisme et est le lieu de villégiature de coopérants européens en provenance de Lomé et de Cotonou.
