Le journalisme gonzo (en anglais gonzo journalism) est une méthode d'investigation journalistique axée sur l'ultra-subjectivité, inventée par Bill Cardoso et popularisée par Hunter S. Thompson qui, pour écrire Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga par exemple, s'était intégré dans un groupe de Hell's Angels, était devenu motard et avait adopté leurs conditions de vie pendant plusieurs mois.

Le parti pris par le journaliste gonzo est d'informer le plus possible son lecteur sur la nature et l'intensité des facteurs « déformant » son point de vue. Ainsi il peut, en faisant appel à son sens critique, recomposer ensuite une image vraisemblable de la réalité. Décrire les ondulations d'un miroir aide à retrouver la forme réelle du reflet anamorphosé qu'il projette. Il s'agit, pour l'auteur, d'assumer jusqu'au bout la subjectivité de son propos.

Le journalisme gonzo fait la part belle à l'anecdote et au récit de beuveries et prises de drogues (on se rapproche plus alors du sens originel du mot « gonzo [1]» que de l'ultra-subjectivité).

P. J. O'Rourke et Tim Jones peuvent aussi être considérés comme rédacteurs gonzo, au même titre que le critique rock Lester Bangs.
