Le Goethe-Institut est une organisation à but non lucratif dont la mission principale est de promouvoir l'apprentissage de la langue allemande comme deuxième langue, encourager le rayonnement de la culture allemande et favoriser la coopération culturelle internationale.
Il délivre des diplômes de langue, comme le Zertifikat Deutsch.
Le Goethe-Institut fut fondé en 1925 sous le nom Deutsche Akademie (DA), et aujourd'hui, est représenté dans 78 pays par 143 instituts (dont 15 en Allemagne)[1] et compte quelque 3300 employés. Le siège du Goethe-Institut se trouve à Munich et à Bonn. Il porte le nom de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, célèbre poète, romancier et dramaturge allemand.
Le Goethe-Institut est financé par le gouvernement fédéral de l'Allemagne. Son budget total est d'environ 278 million d'euros.
