George Campbell (1823–1900)
John George Douglas Campbell, VIIIer duc d'Argyll (30 avril 1823 - 24 avril 1900) est un éminent homme politique libéral du Royaume-Uni.
Il sert comme Conseillé privé (Privy Seal) dans plusieurs cabinets royaux successifs. A partir du milieu des années 1860, il écrit plusieurs ouvrages sur la science, la religion et la politique important alors qu'il obtient le poste de Secretary of State for India en 1868 et il restera jusqu'en 1874. Il s'oppose notamment à Darwin et à la théorie de l'évolution. En économie, il écrit plusieurs ouvrages économiques d'idéologies libérales basées sur le pragmatisme, ainsi il s'oppose aux idées de Disraeli. Son travail, longtemps considéré comme réactionnaire, est cependant aujourd'hui souvent considéré comme utile en opposant des arguments réfléchis à opposer aux faiblesses des théories de ces détracteurs. Il redevient Lord Privy Seal en 1880.
