Histoire des femmes et du genre
L'histoire du genre (ou gender history en anglais), ou histoire des femmes et du genre, est un courant historiographique d'origine américaine. Le concept de « gender » (genre) a été développé en critique de l’histoire sociale des femmes, au début des années 1990. Cette nouvelle approche s’inspire en partie des théories du courant du Linguistic turn.
Démarche
La plupart des recherches historiques concernant les femmes ont pour objectif de mettre en lumière les formes de domination qu’elles ont subies depuis les débuts de l’humanité. Mais en croyant dénoncer l’oppression masculine, l’histoire sociale des femmes ne ferait que la consolider en reprenant à son compte une définition de « la femme » que les hommes ont imposée comme une évidence.[non neutre]
Si le terme de « genre » est préféré à celui de « femme », c’est pour mettre l’accent sur la question de la différenciation sexuelle, en privilégiant les relations entre les hommes et les femmes, étant donné que l’on ne peut définir les uns que par rapport aux autres. De plus, le terme de « genre » permet d'élargir le champ d'étude aux communautés LGBT.
L'œuvre fondatrice du courant est Gender and the politics of history de Joan Scott (Columbia Univ. Press, 1988).
