Fiodor (Fédor ou Feodor) Ivanovitch Chaliapine (en russe : Фёдор Иванович Шаляпин), né le 13 février 1873 à Kazan et mort le 12 avril 1938 à Paris, est un chanteur d'opéra (basse) et acteur russe qui avait également un grand talent pour le dessin.

Biographie

Chaliapine était considéré comme la plus grande basse slave de son temps, et ses successeurs les plus illustres (Mark Reizen, Boris Christoff, Nicolaï Ghiaurov) ont tous été jugés — avec sévérité — à son aune. Ses interprétations de Boris Godounov et de Dossiféï (personnages de Modeste Moussorgski) et de Salieri (opéra Mozart et Salieri de Nikolaï Rimski-Korsakov) sont toujours considérées comme immortelles.

Il incarna Don Quichotte au cinéma, dans le film de Georg Wilhelm Pabst (1933). Il avait commandé pour ce film des chansons à Jacques Ibert et le Don Quichotte à Dulcinée de Ravel (qui ne fut pas retenu).

Chaliapine fut autorisé à quitter l'URSS le 31 mars 1922 pour une tournée à l'étranger en dépit des objections de la Tcheka[1]. Il choisit alors de ne pas retourner en URSS.

Son fils Fédor Chaliapine fils (1907-1992) était un acteur de cinéma.

Enterré à Paris, Chaliapine reposait au cimetière des Batignolles jusqu'en 1984, année où ses restes furent transférés au cimetière de Novodevitchi de Moscou.

Anecdotes

Il possédait une belle villa sur la colline Sainte-Barbe de Saint-Jean-de-Luz, donnant sur la baie.
