Le Latécoère 631 fut un hydravion transatlantique civil. Fleuron de l'industrie Latécoère, il sera le plus grand hydravion jamais construit à son époque. Le prototype sera pris par les allemands pendant l'Occupation, et bombardé par les alliés. Les derniers Latécoère 631 seront retirés du service en 1955 après la perte des appareils n°7 (compagnie Latécoère, perdu en mer), 6 (compagnie Air France, perdu dans l'Atlantique), 3 (SEMAF, au large du Cap Ferret) et 8 (France-Hydro, au Cameroun).
Accident
Le 1er août 1948 (31 juillet) disparut dans l'océan Atlantique le Latécoère 631-06 "Lionel de Marnier" immatriculé F-BDRC avec à son bord 52 personnes dont 40 passagers. Ce vol devait relier Fort-de-France à Port-Étienne (Mauritanie). Selon les sources, il aurait été perdu à 1200 miles de Dakar. Le garde côte américain Campbell rapporte avoir trouvé des débris le 4 août mais pas de survivants.
