Elsevier Science (ou plus simplement Elsevier) est un des plus grands éditeurs de littérature scientifique. Elsevier fait partie du groupe Reed Elsevier et dispose de 7 000 collaborateurs répartis sur une centaine d'endroits. Tout est parti d'un chirurgien mordu par le monde des affaires (Pierre Vinken) qui publiait des revues scientifiques dans sa branche, sachant combien cela pouvait lui rapporter de bénéfices. Cela devint une entreprise importante qu'il vendit vers 1980 à Elsevier ce qui lui valut d'ailleurs une place au Conseil d'administration.
