Eadric Streona

Eadric ou Edric Streona (mort en 1017) est un ealdorman de Mercie, particulièrement fameux pour avoir trahi les Anglo-Saxons au profit des Danois lors de la conquête de l'Angleterre par Knud le Grand.

En 1007, Eadric devient ealdorman des Merciens, puis épouse Eadgyth, la fille du roi Ethelred le Malavisé. La Chronique anglo-saxonne indique qu'il remporte une victoire sur les Gallois, dont on ne sait rien d'autre. En 1015, lorsque Knud le Grand envahit l'Angleterre, Eadric abandonne Edmond Côtes-de-Fer, ayant des rancœurs personnelles contre lui, et se rallie à l'envahisseur. Après la bataille d'Otford, il se range à nouveau auprès d'Edmond, mais le trahit à nouveau lors de la bataille d'Ashingdon : sa désertion entraîne la défaite écrasante des Saxons. Il est possible qu'Edmond ait été également assassiné par les fils d'Eadric.

Devenu seul roi après la mort d'Edmond, Knud divise l'Angleterre en quatre grandes régions et attribue la Mercie à Eadric. Il ne reste guère longtemps en poste : il est exécuté sur ordre de Knud, probablement pour se prémunir de nouvelles trahisons, à Noël 1017 (par Éric de Hlathir, selon l'Encomium Emmae).

Il a laissé une image très négative : Guillaume de Malmesbury le décrit comme « un rejet de l'humanité, et un reproche pour les Anglais » (« the refuse of mankind and a reproach unto the English »). En 2005, le BBC History Magazine l'a choisi comme le pire britannique du XIe siècle[1], et en 2006, un sondage de BBC News le place en 3e position dans les pires Britanniques ayant existé[2].
