L’adelphopoiia est dans l'Empire byzantin l'adoption comme frère ou sœur d'une personne étrangère à sa famille. L’adelphopoiia est considérée comme une relation spirituelle entre deux personnes, créée par les prières d'un rituel. Elle n'était cependant pas reconnue par le droit canon ou civil. Elle servait à confirmer une amitié et portait une obligation d'aide et de soutien mutuel. Elle pouvait servir à se constituer une clientèle.
