Abtalion fut av beit din (vice-président) du Sanhédrin entre 50 et 34 avant l'ère courante. Il forma avec le nassi (président du Sanhédrin) Shemaya l'avant-dernière « paire » de l'ère des Zougot .
Comme celui-ci, il s'était converti au judaïsme; leur popularité était telle qu'ils en éclipsèrent le Grand prêtre, qui ne manqua pas de leur rappeler leurs origines. Ils eurent pour disciples Hillel et Shammaï, dirigeants spirituels de la génération suivante.
