Cenwahl était alors réfugié chez Anna d'Est-Anglie, qui à l'occasion l'a convaincu de se convertir au christianisme en se faisant baptiser. En tant que roi du Wessex, Cenwalh a ensuite encouragé Saint Birinus à faire construire des églises dans tout le royaume.
De 672 à 674 il partagea le pouvoir avec sa femme Seaxburh.
