Camden Town Group

Le Camden Town Group (en français, le « groupe de Camden Town ») est le nom d'un rassemblement d'artistes britanniques post-impressionnistes du début du XXe siècle. Leur nom vient du fait qu'ils se retrouvaient fréquemment dans l'atelier du peintre Walter Sickert à Camden Town, dans la banlieue de Londres.

Parmi les membres du Camden Town Group on trouvait Harold Gilman, Frederick Spencer Gore, Lucien Pissarro (le fils aîné du peintre impressionniste Camille Pissarro), Walter Bayes, James Bolivar Manson, Wyndham Lewis, Duncan Grant, Robert Bevan, Augustus John, Henry Lamb et Charles Ginner.

Le critique Frank Rutter a rejoint le groupe en 1908 et invita les membres à s'inspirer du modèle du Salon des Indépendants qui existait alors en France. Ainsi, ils travaillèrent pour créer l'Allied Artists Association, un groupe dissocié de la Royal Academy de Londres.

Ils organisèrent en 1911 et 1912 trois expositions de peintures post-impressionnistes et cubistes à la Carfax Gallery, mais en termes financiers ce fut un échec et certains de ces artistes se sont regrouper plus tard avec d'autres petits groupes artistiques pour former le London Group.

Membres

Ils décidèrent de limiter leur groupe à 16 membres, Maxwell Gordon Lightfoot mort après la première exposition ayant été remplacé par Duncan Grant[1].
