Calédonie
La Calédonie est l'ancien nom de l'Écosse (du gallois, et brittonique, caled, qui a donné kalet, dur, en breton). C'est la version française du terme latin Caledonia (utilisé aussi en anglais) qui désignait la partie de l'île de Bretagne au nord du mur d'Hadrien, puis du mur d'Antonin. Elle ne fut pas conquise par les Romains malgré l'expédition militaire de Julius Agricola en 84, et ne fit jamais partie de l'Empire romain. Une flotte romaine en fit le tour, vérifiant ainsi le caractère insulaire de la Bretagne[1].
Conquise par les Scots elle devint Scotia, qui donna en français le terme Écosse.
