Brownsville est une ville du comté de Cameron dans l'état du Texas aux États-Unis. Elle comptait 139 722 habitants en 2000 (plus ou moins 173 000 en 2008) . Elle est le siège du comté de Cameron.

Brownsville possède un aéroport international (Brownsville/South Padre Island, code AITA : BRO).

Histoire

Brownsville, Texas en 1857.
  • Fort Texas (plus tard Fort Brown), est établi sur la frontière avec le Mexique en 1845 à environ un kilomètre de ce qui deviendra le centre de Brownsville, face à la ville mexicaine de Matamoros sur la rive du Río Grande.
  • Alors qu'il n'est pas encore achevé, le fort est attaqué par l'Armée mexicaine qui entreprend son siège du 3 au 9 mai 1846. L'un des deux soldats américains tués lors de cette attaque est le commandant du fort, le Major Jacob Brown, en son honneur le poste est renommé Fort Brown.
  • La Bataille de Palo Alto se déroula à huit kilomètres du centre actuel de Brownsville le 8 mai 1846, elle est la première bataille de la guerre américano-mexicaine. Le 9 mai, lui succède la Bataille du Resaca de la Palma qui se déroula à l'intérieur des actuelles limites de la ville.
  • Brownsville est fondée le 13 janvier 1849 par Charles Stillman et garde le style hispanique imposé par son fondateur.
  • Charles Lindbergh y fit escale en 1929, venant de Mexico.
