Les 3 M sont un principe du système de production de Toyota. Il faut ici considérer qu'éviter toute perte substantielle constitue un gain pour l'entreprise, l'objectif de Toyota étant de maximiser le profit. Ainsi le toyotisme fait de la lutte contre toutes les formes de gaspillages dont on distingue trois formes :
