What Is This Thing Called Love?

What Is This Thing Called Love? (Quelle est cette chose que l'on appelle l'amour?) est une chanson écrite par Cole Porter pour la comédie musicale Wake Up and Dream. Elsie Carlisle a chanté ce thème lors de la première de la comédie musicale à Londres en mars 1929. Le morceau est devenu un standard de jazz et l'une des compositions les plus populaires de Porter[1].

Wake Up and Dream compte 263 représentations à Londres[1]. La comédie a été remarquée à New York, les critiques applaudissant à l'interprétation de Tilly Losch de la chanson[2]. En décembre 1929, la comédie a été produite à Broadway; dans la version américaine, "What Is This Thing Called Love?" a été chantée par Frances Shelley. Ginny Simms l'a interprétée dans le film biographique sur la vie de Porter, Nuit et jour.

Après le succès des enregistrements de Ben Bernie et Fred Rich en 1930, le morceau est rapidement devenu un standard. Des versions importantes ont été enregistrées par le pianiste stride James P. Johnson, le clarinettiste Artie Shaw et le guitariste Les Paul[1]. Les interprétations jazz sont habituellement rapides. L'une des versions instrumentales parmi les plus connues est celle de Clifford Brown et Max Roach avec Sonny Rollins en 1956. Le saxophoniste Sidney Bechet a enregistré la chanson sur un tempo lent en 1941 avec le trompettiste Charlie Shavers[1].

La tonalité change plusieurs fois de façon étonnante entre le mode majeur et le mode mineur. L'harmonie de la chanson a été utilisée plusieurs fois pour créer de compositions nouvelles. Par exemple, le standard de bebop "Hot House" par Tadd Dameron utilise la même progression harmonique[1].
