La Vegan Society est une association caritative fondée en Angleterre, principalement par Donald Watson et Elsie Shrigley[1], le 1er novembre 1944. Donald Watson crée le terme « vegan » afin de représenter les végétariens ne consommant ni produits laitiers ni œufs et ainsi faire la distinction avec les autres formes de végétarisme[2]. La Journée internationale du végétalisme est célébrée chaque année, le 1er jour de novembre, date de la création de la Vegan Society. L'organisation définit le véganisme en tant que « mode de vie qui tend à exclure, autant qu'il est possible, toutes formes d'exploitation et de cruauté faites aux animaux afin de se nourrir, se vêtir ou dans n'importe quel autre but[3]. »
