Jon Michael Geoffrey Manningham « Tom » Adams (24 septembre 1931 - 11 mars 1985) était un homme politique de la Barbade qui a servi de premier ministre de la Barbade de 1976 à 1985.

Il était le fils unique de Grantley Adams (avocat et seul premier ministre de la Fédération des Indes occidentales) et de Grace Adams, née Thorne.

Adams a fait ses études au « Harrison College de la Barbade », puis au Magdalen College de l'Université d'Oxford.

Premier ministre

Il a servi en tant que deuxième premier ministre de la Barbade entre 1976 et 1985. Son parti, le Parti travailliste de la Barbade (BLP), avait capitalisé sur le désir de la population pour un changement du parti d'Errol Barrow, le Parti travailliste démocrate, qui avait gouverné l'île depuis l'indépendance en 1966.

Adams suit la droite ligne du conservatisme des années 1980 à l'image de Margaret Thatcher et de Ronald Reagan. Cette alliance trouve sa plus grande expression lorsque Tom Adams a été le promoteur du premier plan de regroupement des États des Caraïbes orientales.

Adams est mort d'un arrêt cardiaque à Ilaro Cour, la résidence officielle du Premier ministre le 11 mars 1985, devenant le premier premier ministre du pays à décéder dans l'exercice de ses fonctions[1].

Son vice-Premier ministre, Harold Bernard St. John, lui succéda mais la Barbade se tourna vers l'autre parti politique, celui d'Errol Barrow, et son DLP dans à l'élection suivante en 1986. Ironiquement, Barrow mourrait en fonction en 1987, peu après sa victoire électorale.

Le bâtiment de la Banque centrale de la Barbade a été nommé « Centre Tom Adams » en son honneur.
