The Agonist est un groupe Québécois originaire de Montréal de métal moderne aux influences Death Mélodique et Metalcore crée en 2004. Le groupe a sorti son premier album Once Only Imagined le 14 août 2007 sur le label Century Media Records. La vidéo pour le morceau "Business Suits and Combat Boots" a été élue 6ème meilleure vidéo de l'année 2007 dans l'émission Headbanger's Ball sur MTV2.

La chanteuse Alissa White-Gluz a été citée dans le magazine Revolver parmi "les filles les plus sexy du métal" en 2007. Alissa a également participé à l'émission Canadian Idol. Son chant est extrêmement varié : voix death, voix black, voix claire et parfois même lyrique. Le 23 février 2009 est sorti leur second album Lullabies for the Dormant Mind.

Leur première apparition en Europe se fera lors de la huitième édition du Metal Female Voice Fest en Belgique, le 24 octobre 2010.

- Avant de s'appeler "The Agonist" le groupe se nommait "The Tempest", d'où le titre la première chanson de leur deuxième album ( The Tempest (The Siren's Song; The Banshee's Cry) ; Lullabies For The Dormant Mind ). Jugeant ce nom trop commun et peu en accord avec la mentalité du groupe.

- On peut entendre la voix d'Alissa White Gluz dans « The Legend of Ereshkigal » un des titres de l'album Irkalla du groupe québécois Erimha
