Representation of the People Act 1918

Le Representation of the People Act 1918 est une loi britannique destinée à réformer le système électoral. On la désigne parfois sous le nom de Fourth Reform Act. Elle est la première à inclure pratiquement la majorité des hommes dans le système électoral, et pour la première fois l'étendit aux femmes.

Le suffrage fut étendu par la quasi-abolition de la condition d'être propriétaire pour les hommes et par l'inclusion des femmes de plus de 30 ans répondant aux critères minimums de propriété. La reconnaissance partielle du droit de vote aux femmes était motivé par la reconnaissance de leur travail dans les usines d'armement pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale. Cependant les femmes n'étaient toujours pas les égales, au niveau politique, des hommes (qui pouvaient voter à partir de 21 ans) ; l'égalité complète ne fut atteinte qu'avec le Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928.

Les dispositions de la loi sont[1] :

  1. Tous les adultes hommes obtiennent le droit de vote, à condition qu'ils aient plus de 21 ans et soient propriétaires résidents.
  2. Les femmes de plus de 30 ans reçoivent le droit de vote mais doivent soit être propriétaire, soit être mariée à un propriétaire.
  3. Plus de sièges sont attribués aux zones industrielles.
  4. Les élections ont lieu un jour fixé à l'avance chaque année.
