La Society for the relief of free negroes held in bondage, la première société antiesclavagiste au monde et en Amérique du Nord, fut fondée à Philadelphie en 1775, soit un an avant la déclaration d'indépendance des États-Unis, par les quakers[1].
Quelque temps après, en 1785, Benjamin Franklin est devenu le président de l'organisation. La société lui a demandé d'amener la question d'esclavage à la Convention Constitutionnelle de 1787. Il l'a fait en 1790[2].
Connue aussi sous le nom de Pennsylvania Abolition Society, elle avait pour objectif d'abolir l'esclavage aux Etats-Unis[3]. Elle constitue encore un groupe de plaidoyer contre l'esclavage[4].
