Intellectuel syrien, Muhammad Kurd Ali (1876-1952), né d'une mère circassienne et d’un père kurde de Suleymania dont la famille est descendante de la dynastie kurde Ayyoubide. Il est l’une des grandes figures du mouvement de renaissance arabo-islamique (nahda) de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Maitrisant le français et le turc, il exerça le métier de journaliste et écrivit de nombreux ouvrages.
