La Motion Picture Patents Company (la M.P.P.C., appelée aussi Edison Trust) était une compagnie créée en 1908 et dirigée par Thomas Edison et Jeremiah Kennedy (le représentant de la compagnie Biograph). Elle fut surnommée le trust. Elle avait le monopole de la vente de pellicules (grâce à George Eastman) et percevait une taxe de deux dollars par semaine des exploitants de salle pour l'utilisation du projecteur breveté. Des personnes commencent alors à se rebeller avec en tête Carl Laemmle (futur fondateur d'Universal). Une légende veut que l'installation des studios de cinéma en Californie à Hollywood soit due au souci des producteurs d'échapper aux représentants de la M.P.P.C. car les détectives privés payés par Edison pouvaient débarquer sur les tournages dans les studios d'Hollywood pour vérifier que les cameramen tournaient avec des pellicules d'Eastman[1].
