Lokesh Chandra est un universitaire contemporain spécialiste du bouddhisme et des arts indiens. Il est le fils du célèbre érudit sanscrit Raghu Vira et est aussi membre du Rajya Sabha indien, vice-président du Conseil indien des relations culturelles (New Delhi), et Président du Conseil indien de la recherche historique. En 2006, il reçoit le prix indien de Padma Bhushan. Il a à son crédit plus de 360 ouvrages et éditions. Parmi ceux-ci, certains sont devenus des classiques comme son « Dictionnaire tibéto-sanscrit », « Matières pour une histoire de littérature tibétaine », « Iconographie bouddhiste du Tibet », et son « Dictionnaire d'Art bouddhiste » en près de vingt volumes. Il est finalement le directeur de l'Académie internationale de la culture indienne, située à New Delhi[1].
