Ben Sira

Ben Sira est un érudit, qui a écrit le Siracide (ou Ecclésiastique) vers -180. Les seules informations qu'on a de lui sont issues de ce livre. Rédigé en hébreu, il fut traduit en grec par son petit-fils en Égypte. Celui-ci y ajouta une préface.

Qui était-il ?

Le prologue de la version grecque du Siracide l'appelle (l. 27) "Jesus le fils de Sira'h de Jérusalem." La copie en possession de Saadia Gaon porte quant à elle "Shim`on, ben Yeshoua, ben Eleazar ben Sira", en concordance avec le manuscrit hébreu B. En intervertissant "Shim'on" et "Yeshoua", on obtient le même nom dans tous les manuscrits.
Le nom de "Shim`on" est confirmé par la version syriaque, qui porte "Yeshoua fils de Shim`on, surnommé Bar Asira". La différence entre Bar Sira et Bar Asira est intéressante à noter, et "Asira" ("prisonnier") est une étymologie populaire pour Sira.

Il semblerait finalement que le nom de l'auteur soit Yeshoua (Ιησους, francisé en Jesus) ben Shimon ben Eleazar ben Sira.

Quant au patronyme, Sira signifie "épine" en Araméen. L'ajout d'un chi en Grec est une procédure courante (cf. Actes 1:19, Hakeldama devient ch).

Selon la version grecque, mais pas le version syriaque, Ben Sira aurait beaucoup voyagé (xxxiv. 11) dans des conditions périlleuses (ibid. 12). Dans l'hymne du chapitre li., il mentionne les périls divers dont Dieu l'a délivré, mais il pourrait s'agir d'une imitation poétique d'un thème fréquent dans les Psaumes. Les calomnies auxquelles il a été exposé en présence d'un roi (probablement ptoléméen) ne sont pas mentionnées ailleurs que dans la version grecque.

Finalement, la seule certitude qu'on peut tirer du texte est que Ben Sira était un érudit, un scribe versé dans la Loi, et particulièrement dans ce qu'on a appelé plus tard les livres sapientiaux.

L'alphabet de Yeshoua Ben Sira

Un écrit hébreu du Xe siècle, nommé l’Alphabet de Yeshoua Ben Sira, raconte le mythe de Lilith, la première femme créée par Dieu à l'égal d'Adam, avant Ève. En voici le début :

« Dieu créa Adam et vit qu’il était seul. Il dit : "Il n’est pas bon pour un homme d’être seul". Alors, Il créa une femme, à partir de la terre comme Adam et Il l’appela Lilith. Adam et Lilith se querellèrent. Il lui dit : "Je ne me coucherai pas sous toi, mais seulement au-dessus de toi. Tu es faite pour être dessous, parce que je te suis supérieur". Lilith répondit : "Je ne me coucherai pas sous toi mais sur toi. Nous sommes égaux, nous avons été créés de la même terre". Aucun des deux ne voulut céder. Quand Lilith le vit, elle prononça le Nom Ineffable et partit dans les airs. »
