23andMe est une société de biotechnologie basée à Mountain View en Californie qui propose, moyennant finance (99 USD plus 9 USD/mois*12 mois minimum, en mai 2011), une analyse du code génétique des clients. Pour certaines maladies ayant un marqueur génétique reconnu mais aussi simplement supposé, il est indiqué au client, en cas de présence d'un marqueur, qu'il est à risque de développer cette maladie. Ceci est censé « rendre service » à ces clients-malades potentiels. Une telle démarche pose de nombreux problèmes dont le moindre n'est pas le devenir des informations collectées par cette société sur chaque individu. En décembre 2007 plusieurs sociétés, incluant 23andMe et deCODE, ont annoncé la mise sur le marché de tests à 999$ pour sélectionner des polymorphismes nucléotidiques. Google a investi 3,9M$ dans 23andMe, dont la co-fondatrice Anne Wojcicki est mariée au co-fondateur de Google Sergey Brin[1]. Genentech aurait aussi investi dans 23andMe[2].
