Natrix tessellata est une espèce de serpents de la famille des colubridés.

Taxonomie

Deux sous-espèces ont été décrites :

• Natrix tessellata heinrothi (Hecht, 1930)
• Natrix tessellata tessellata (Laurenti, 1768)

Répartition

Ce reptile se rencontre dans toute l'Eurasie, de l'Italie à la Chine, ainsi qu'au Moyen-Orient (Égypte, Israël…).

Habitat

Natrix tessellata est une couleuvre aquatique fréquentant des cours d'eau et des lacs, le plus souvent en eau peu profonde.

Description

Comportement et écologie

Elle est carnivore et se nourrit de petits poissons et amphibiens. C'est un serpent aquatique qui passe beaucoup de temps dans l'eau, notamment pour chasser. Lorsqu'elle se sent menacée, il peut lui arriver de feindre la mort et de secréter une substance à l'odeur désagréable afin de dissuader ses prédateurs de l'attaquer.

Menaces

L'espèce n'est pas considérée par l'UICN comme une espèce menacée.

Protection

Cette espèce est citée en annexe II de la Convention de Berne.
