En linguistique, la coréférence est le phénomène qui consiste pour plusieurs expressions différentes contenues dans une phrase ou dans un document, à désigner le même objet. Par exemple une personne, un lieu, un événement, ou encore une date. Dans la terminologie linguistique, on dit qu'une co-référence est reliée à son antécédent.
Il existe de nombreuses possibilités de co-références. La liaison entre un pronom et un nom qui désigne le même objet sémantique. Dans l'exemple ci dessous, le pronom Il désigne Jean:
- Jean est riche et il aime ça.
Deux graphies nominales peuvent également co-référer comme dans les exemples ci dessous qui font successivement co-référer un nom propre et un syntagme nominal, et un sigle et un nom propre:
- Apple est un fabricant d'ordinateur. La firme à la pomme est mondialement connue.
- IBM fabrique des ordinateurs et son nom complet est International Business Machine.
