Behind the Mask est une chanson de l'artiste américain Michael Jackson, présente sur son premier album posthume, Michael. Neuvième piste de l'album, elle est l'une des deux seules a avoir été enregistrée durant la période d'enregistrement de Thriller (avec Much Too Soon). Cette chanson est une reprise d'un titre du groupe japonais Yellow Magic Orchestra, et Michael Jackson y rajoutera des paroles.

Structure musicale

La chanson, d'une durée de 5 minutes et 3 secondes, s'ouvre par des bruits de foule lors d'un concert (qui ont été enregistrés lors du Dangerous World Tour). Enchaîne un solo de trompette, puis un beatbox créant la rhytmique de la chanson. Les cris de la foule s'intensifient, puis disparaissent, et Michael commence à chanter.

Genre

Cette chanson est d'un style typique « Michael Jackson des années 80's », mêlant le funk, la Pop et la Soul habilement.

Clip vidéo

Le clip est un montage réalisé à partir de 1600 vidéos de fans envoyées des quatre coins du monde. Nommé le BTM Project (Behind The Mask Project), il a été largement promu sur la page Facebook officielle de l'artiste, via des bandes-annonces et des teasers. Mais certains fans déplorent la piètre qualité imaginative de ce clip (tout comme de celle des deux autres singles de l'album), habitués aux clips à grand spectacle de Michael Jackson comme Thriller, Bad, You Rock My World...
