L'Animal hoarding (« accumulation d'animaux » en anglais) est une maladie mentale qui consiste à posséder trop d'animaux de compagnie. Plus exactement, on possède plus d'animaux que l'on n'en peut héberger, nourrir et soigner correctement et dans le même temps, on renie cette incapacité. Les malades sont vraiment attachés à leurs animaux et n'envisagent pas de s'en séparer. Le plus souvent ils ne veulent pas admettre qu'ils les font souffrir. Cette maladie atteint plus particulièrement des femmes.
En 2011, on a par exemple retrouvé près de 200 animaux entassés dans un studio en France, à Rochefort, dans des conditions sanitaires déplorables : 17 chats, un furet, un écureuil de Corée, une quarantaine de rats, des perruches, pigeons, tourterelles, tortues de Floride, cochons d'Inde, hamsters, souris, gerbilles, octodons, lapins et quatre poissons tropicaux[1].
Le personnage fictif de la "dame aux chats" des Simpson est atteint de cette maladie.
